As we grow older, our natural process is to try and build a foundation of well-being and security that allows us to develop positive relational networks and thrive as we pursue our life’s goals. Often times, a disruption of that sense of security can lead to emotional and behavioral issues that can make our attachment to others both complex and disorganized. Sometimes these attachment issues can bring about relational patterns that are more related to the trauma and neglect than they are to the skills and memories that are needed for the development of healthy expectations for relationships and positive growth.

Trauma often occurs through multi-generational transmission and present incidents of trauma can adversely affect natural development in childhood, causing disorientation, disorganization, and lack of balance which can seriously compromise the relational expertise needed to negotiate adulthood. Genetic memories and lifetime experiences can cause background noise that may forever influence our ability to have and create a healthy life and maintain positive relationships. Our brains mistake the world as an obstacle course threatening our literal emotional and physical survival, leaving us impaired in our ability to spot real threats to survival, and unable to relate to the world in a way that creates healthy opportunity and functioning.
